Extranet |
An extranet is a type of private network that works by using the network connectivity, internet protocols and also some of the public telecommunication system that share a part of the information of an organization information and also its operation with different vendors, suppliers, customers, partners and other businessmen. An extranet is a part of a company which is extended for the users living outside the company. Sometimes the extranet is also defined as a "state of mind" in which the Internet is viewed as a way to do business with a pre approved set of other companies’ business-to-business (B2B), in isolation from all other Internet users. In contrast, business-to-consumer (B2C) involves known server(s) of one or many other companies that involve in communicating with previously unknown consumer users.
An extranet can also be understood as a private form of intranet created on the Internet or several other broadcast systems not available to the general public, but is managed by more than one company's administrator. Extranet is only a buzzword that describes what different institutions have been doing for several decades which suggests interconnecting with each other in order to create a private network in order to share different information. Unlike the intranet which is a private computer network that basically uses things like Internet protocols and network connectivity to a secured and shared part of an organization’s information and also its operation with its employees. The extranet is that its interconnections are usually proved over a shared network rather than through dedicated physical lines. Another very common term for extranet is that it can be designated as the private part" of a website, where "registered users" can navigate, enabled by authentication mechanisms on a "login page". Working in any organization an extranet always requires privacy and security. These include server management, firewalls, the issue and its use of digital certificates or related ways of user authentication, encryption of messages, and the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) that tunnel through the public network.
The extranet are the technical specifications that describe different methods but all these implementing methods never explicitly describe an extranet. During the late 1990s and early 2000s some of the industries started to use the term "extranet" to describe central repositories of shared data made accessible via the web only to authorized members of particular work groups. There are many types of commercial extranet applications some of these are the completely commercial extranet applications and some of these are pure file management. There are others also that include wide collaboration and varied project management tools. There also exist some of the Open Source extranet applications and modules, which can be integrated into other online collaborative applications such as Content Management Systems.
Extranet also has certain disadvantage which is like that extranets can be expensive in implementing and also maintaining within an organization. Another problem is with the security the security of extranet can be a matter of great concern especially at the time when it is dealing with some valuable organizational information.
