Architecture and Operating System of PDA

The Personal Digital Assistants, also known as PDA, are the small and handy computers that have changed the course of communication in the recent century. They are not only high tech mobile PDA phones but have in them a complete electronic repertoire to make way for internet facilities, E-mailing and other communicational modes, schedule planners with self built alarm systems and even digital diaries. The Architecture and Operating System of PDA include popularly accepted variations of the ARM architecture, known to be the Advanced RISC processor fitted Machine along with Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Blackberry OS and Symbian operating systems.

The PDA phone architecture involves Intel XScale Trademark denoted ARM architectural variation with an Advanced RISC Machine and the previously designed Acorn RISC Machine. They are a category of RISC microprocessors used in mobiles and similar embedded set ups. The design of this microprocessor derive it's origin from the architectural systems used in processors like the MOS Technology 6502, which had popularity in the consumer electronics hub. Today almost 75% of the embedded RISC 32 bit CPUs' involve the ARM architecture. This microprocessor technology used in the PDA Architecture is the prime options for all kinds of consumer electronics and related communicative high tech set ups found in mobile phones, PDA, gaming units, media players and even calculators. The ARM technology under the Architecture and Operating System of PDA has the following features:

  • This is a Load / Store form of architecture.

  • It is equipped with an Orthogonal Instruction Set

  • A 16 x 32 bit register file is inbuilt in the ARM system which is quite large.

  • The ARMv6 cores don't have support for the misaligned memory access.

  • A 32 bits fixed instruction width is there to help easy pipelining and decoding at decreased code intensity cost.

  • All ARM architectured microprocessors function as per the single cycled execution mode.

  • In Intel 80286 and Motorola 68020 microprocessors involve arithmetically instructed alteration in the condition codes as desired, along with indexed modes of addressing and 32 barrel shifter backups.
In the PDA Architecture and Operating System, the OS, that is, the Operating Systems in such PDA phones used are the Palm Source owned Palm OS, developed by the Palm Computing Incorporate under US Robotics. The Palm OS involves a graphically designed user interface based on touchscreen dependent operational mode. Information management at a personal level is made possible not only by the Palm OS, but also by several other PDA Operating Systems such as Windows Mobile, being a compact and high tech Operating system based on the Microsoft Win32 API, that is, Application Programming Interface. As the popular technological back ups in the Architecture and Operating System of PDA other OS like Blackberry OS and Symbian OS are used. The OpenZaurus OS is used for the Sharp Zaurus PDA series designed and launched by the Sharp Corporation. The SL 5000D uses the Linux based Operating System.

There are numerous other PDA Architecture and Operating System features that are of wide use nowadays. The PDA technology is now the premier one in consumer electronics and carries the potency to evolve as one of the most invincible technological means of electronic communication in the near future.
